Futurism

Futurism emerged from Italy and it was a movement that appreciated the industrial revolution. The artists that belonged to this movement loved; speed, noise, machines, pollution and cities.

As with most movements in the beginning of the 20th Century, Futurism was practised through painting, sculpture, music, literature, architecture ang graphic design just to mention a few of the mediums.

Filippo Tommaso Marinetti wrote the Futurist Manifesto in 1908 which was published on the front page of a very influential French daily, Le Figaro, on February 20 1909.

Marinetti who once said "Destroy the cult of the past." was soon followed by other painters such as Umberto Boccioni, Carlo Carra, Giacomo Balla, Gino Severini and the composer Luigi Russolo.

Although Futurism was an Italian movement there were parallel movements in Russia and England.

In the technique of Futurist painting one can see similarities to Cubism paintings. The way objects are deconstructed to show multible sides from one perspective etc. This was a way to show speed for example.
